  • Q: How can a broken axle shaft be removed from the axle without dismantling it on 1989 Volvo 245?
    A: If there is a break in the axle shaft, the splined end will stay inside the axle when the outer end is removed and removal of the broken piece can be done without dismantling the rear axle or removing it from the car. Start by removing the cover to the differential housing with care not to introduce any dirt into the differential. Using a piece of stiff wire or similar object, push the broken end of the axle shaft which will still be engaged with the side gear into the axle casing. Once it is well clear of the side gear, it is recoverable using a hooked wire inserted in the outside end of the casing.
