A deeper type of sump pan was introduced early in 1979, and to remove it from the car with the engine in position, several operations must be followed. First, raise the front end and support the car under the jacking points. Next, drain the engine oil and remove the splash shield from under the engine. Then, remove the engine mounting nuts from the underside of the crossmember and release both pinch-bolts from the universal joint coupling on the steering shaft, sliding the coupling up the splines on the shaft. The engine must be raised slightly by attaching a hoist to the lifting lugs or using a crossbar and threaded hook. After that, unscrew and remove the bolts securing the crossmember and lower it, then unbolt and remove the engine mounting from the left-hand side. Unbolt the bracing brackets from the rear corners of the sump pan, followed by unbolting the sump pan, lowering it, and turning it to remove it. Refitting is a reversal of removal, using a new gasket and tightening the steering coupling pinch-bolts to the specified torque before filling the engine with oil.
