Dismantling the pump is quite simple. Remove the delivery pipe from its socket, remove the wire clip and remove the strainer. Remove the four bolts and remove the cover, spring, and ball then the gears. Clean the parts in petrol and wipe dry with the non-fluffy cloth. Examine the gears and housing for damage, examining the cover for wear. Fit the gears and check the backlash that should be between 0.006 and 0.014 in (0.15 and 0.35 mm) and end float, which should be 0.0008 - 0.0047 in (0.02 - 0.12 mm). Ensure the drive gear rotates freely without side play; if wear is apparent then the pump must be renewed. Check the relief valve spring against the requirements, if it does not meet the requirements, it needs to be renewed. The sealing rings on either end of the delivery pipe are made of special rubber and they are manufactured to very close tolerances. Use only Volvo parts to renew them and on pump assembly coat them with soapy water to aid in fitment.
