2009 Volvo S40 Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the sump and oil pump for 1.6 litre diesel engine on 2009 Volvo S40?
A: To remove the sump, first remove the timing belt. Next, undo the three bolts to remove the oil pump pick-up tube from oil pump and block and discard the oil seal and prepare to fit a new one. Then, remove the oil pump by undoing the eight bolts. For refitting, make sure that you remove all traces of sealant, and clean the mating surfaces of the oil pump and cylinder block thoroughly. Apply a bead of silicone sealant (4mm wide) to the mating face of the cylinder block being careful that no sealant enters any holes. With a new oil seal in place, refit the oil pump over the crankshaft, lining up the flats in the pump drive gear and in the crankshaft. New oil pumps have the oil seal already fitted and a protective sleeve for the crankshaft. Install the oil pump bolts and tighten them to specified torque. Reconnect the oil pick-up tube to the pump and cylinder block with a new oil pick-up tube O-ring seal, making sure the oil dipstick guide tube is in the correct position. Finally, refit the woodruff key to the crankshaft and slide the crankshaft sprocket into place and the process is done, following the steps in reverse order.
