1988 Volvo 244 Distributor Parts and Q&A
Q: What are the steps involved in overhauling the Chrysler and Bosch type distributors, and how do the engine rev limiters function on 1988 Volvo 244?
A: The following overhaul operations should be regarded as the limit of economic work, as many internal components are not supplied as spares and a generally well-worn distributor is better renewed. For the Chrysler type, begin by removing the distributor, then take off the rotor and springs that hold the Hall pick-up, disconnect the wiring plug, and remove the Hall pick-up. Reassembly involves reversing the removal process while ensuring that the leads are positioned out of the way of the rotor. For the Bosch type, start by removing the distributor, then extract the screws and remove the cap fixing clips, followed by the rotor arm and dust cover. Next, extract the circlip from around the distributor shaft and remove the two retaining screws from the body. Use two screwdrivers as levers to prise out the rotor, taking care not to lose the lockpin, then extract the second circlip and remove the Hall pick-up. Reassembly is done in reverse order. Additionally, the 8200 and 8230 engines (except B230F) are fitted with an engine rev limiter, which consists of a spring-loaded weight on top of the distributor rotor arm that shorts the ignition circuit at 6200 rpm due to centrifugal force overcoming spring resistance. In B230F models, engine speed is limited by the control unit, which cuts fuel supply to the injectors.
