Volvo V70 Vacuum Pump

The Volvo V70 Vacuum Pump provides the constant vacuum that cannot be generated by diesel and direct-injection engines on their own, ensuring assured braking and stable activity of many of the control systems. Past Volvo diesels had applied a camshaft-driven diaphragm or piston unit with which the air in the brake booster and HVAC actuators could be pulled back and forth to provide up to 12 psi of negative pressure. When Volvo equipped their powertrains with high-pressure common-rail injection and turbochargers, a small rotary vane type, still mechanical but lubricated by engine oil, became widespread, and a tandem type could even be mounted in the same housing as the fuel pump. In the new models, certain trims have been switched to an electric pump which just operates when required, reducing load on the alternator and contributing to Volvo reducing its emissions. The Vacuum Pump also supplies negative pressure to turbo wastegate controls, EGR flaps, and a number of emissions valves, and therefore its health has an impact on power output, idle quality, and cabin climate functions. No matter what year it is, all V70 drivers are able to experience the difference when the booster is fully assisted. The condition of a broken Vacuum Pump frequently presents as a stiff brake pedal, a coarse idle, or climate doors that will not open, which is a sure sign of the problem. A pressure gauge reading less than 8.8 psi is a confirming factor. Since engine debris and overheating may lead to damaged internal gears and bearings, it is suggested to replace the pump every time significant engine work has been done to ensure that the braking and control systems are ones we can rely on.

Volvo V70 Vacuum Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the camshaft driven vacuum pump on Volvo V70?
    A:
The camshaft driven vacuum pump is only fitted to diesel models. To remove it, start by taking off the air cleaner assembly with the mass airflow sensor. For D5244 T to T3 engines, pull the plastic cover straight up from its mountings, then undo the positive wiring connections and the two screws to move the engine compartment relay/fusebox aside. Release the clamps, undo the mounting bracket bolt, and remove the air pipe from the turbocharger to the air filter. Note the fitted positions and disconnect the vacuum hoses from the pump, starting with the small vacuum hose and then squeezing the collar to disconnect the brake servo hose. Undo the two bolts securing the ventilation pipe and move it aside to access the pump. For D5244 T4 to T7 engines, also note the fitted positions and disconnect the vacuum hoses from the pump. For all engines, undo the three bolts and remove the pump from the cylinder head, being prepared for fluid spillage, and discard the O-ring seals as new ones must be fitted; dismantling of the pump is not recommended. For refitting, fit new O-ring seals to the pump mating face, align the pump drive lugs with the slots in the end of the exhaust camshaft, and fit the pump to the cylinder head, tightening the bolts to the specified torque. The remainder of the refitting process is a reversal of the removal steps.
