Most Volvo models have the caliper body, normally made of cast iron, with the pistons made of steel or lightweight phenolic, which combines strength and heat resistance. There are two operating styles that have emerged in both generations of the V70. The floating Brake Caliper has a single-sided piston forcing the inner pad, then sliding the whole housing on guide pins to press the outer pad, and costs less, but requires clean and greased slides so the caliper does not wear unevenly or drag. - Q: What should you be aware of before starting work on front Brake Caliper and hydraulic fluid and asbestos dust on Volvo V70?A:Before beginning work, be aware of the dangers of hydraulic fluid and asbestos dust. Start by applying the hand brake and chocking the rear wheels. Loosen the bolts on the front wheel, jack up the front of the car and place it in axle stands before removing the roadwheel. To reduce the loss of fluid, unscrew the master cylinder reservoir filler cap, cover the filler neck with polythene and tie it with an elastic band. Use a brake hose clamp or other tool to clamp the front flexible hydraulic hose. Clean the area of the hydraulic hose to caliper union and then slacken the hose union half a turn, being ready for a spillage of fluid. Remove the brake pads and unscrew the caliper from the hydraulic hose and immediately wipe up any brake fluid spillage and also plug or cap the open unions. If the caliper bracket has to be removed, undo the two bolts that are holding the bracket in place to the steering knuckle, noting that new bolts will be required for refitting. With the brake caliper removed, clean the caliper externally using degreaser and a soft brush, and then remove the bleed screw and empty any remaining hydraulic fluid. Take out the piston dust boot and pull the piston out of the caliper bore, using low air pressure if there is a need. Hook out the piston seal from the bore and withdraw the two guide pin rubber bushes. Clean the piston and caliper bore with a lint-free rag and clean brake fluid or brake cleaner and polish out any slight imperfections with steel wool. Renew all the rubber components as a matter of course and blow through the fluid inlet and bleed screw hole with compressed air. Lubricate the new piston seal with clean brake fluid and place it in the groove in the bore. Fit a new dust boot to the piston being sure that it is properly seated, and lubricate both the piston and the bore with clean brake fluid. Offer up the piston and dust boot to the caliper engaging the dust boot with the groove in the caliper before pushing the piston through. Fit the new guide pin rubber bushes and refit the caliper bleed screw. If the caliper bracket has come off, refit it with new bolts tightened to the specified caliper torque. Refit the brake pads, screwing the caliper before attaching the flexible hose on the caliper bracket. Tighten the flexible hose union ensuring that the hose is not kinked then remove any clamps/ polythene and bleed the hydraulic system. Finally, set up the footbrake two or three times to fix the pads and refit the roadwheel, lower the car and tighten the wheel bolts in a diagonal order to the specified torque.

Apply the footbrake two or three times to bed in the pads, and then re-fit the roadwheel and drop the car, tightening the wheel bolts in a diagonal pattern to specified torque.
