Volvo V70 Brake Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What should you know about the Brake Master Cylinder before starting work on the hydraulic fluid and master cylinder on Volvo V70?
    A:
Before you begin work be aware of the hazards of hydraulic fluid. Overhaul of the master cylinder is not possible, and the internal components are not available in separation, if it is fault, the unit must be renewed. Start by disconnecting the battery negative lead. Depress the brake pedal several times to collapse any remaining vacuum of air in the servo, then siphon as much fluid as possible from the master cylinder reservoir with a hydrometer or old poultry baster, not to siphon by mouth as it is poisonous. Then undo the fasteners and disconnect the engine cross-stay from between the brackets on the front suspension turrets, then disconnect any wiring connectors from the reservoir/master cylinder. For manual transmission models, release the spring clip and disconnect the clutch master cylinder fluid hose from the side of the reservoir being ready for fluid spillage and plugging the open ends. Disconnect the hydraulic pipe unions from the master cylinder, capping the open unions to keep out dirt. Undo the retaining nut and pull out the heat shield from the master cylinder mounting studs then release the nuts holding the master cylinder in position to the servo, you now have to throw out the O-ring seal being careful not to get hydraulic fluid on the paintwork. If necessary, undo the screw and lift the reservoir from the master cylinder body, discarding the two seals. For refitting, if the reservoir was removed, put it back on the master cylinder with new seals and tighten the retaining screw securely. Put the master with the new seal into place on the servo unit and fix it with the nuts tightened to the specified torque. Refit heat shield and holding nut and reattach brake pipes (do not fully tighten union nuts at this stage) Refit the fluid hose to the reservoir, lubricating the hose end with brake hydraulic fluid to assist fitting and reconnect the reservoir/master cylinder electrical connectors. Place absorbent rags under the brake pipe unions on the master cylinder then refill the reservoir with clean hydraulic fluid of the correct type. Tighten the brake pipe unions securely when hydraulic fluid can be seen seeping out and bleed the hydraulic system when you are finished (for manual transmission models, the clutch hydraulic system should also be bled). After bleeding, pressure test the master cylinder by depressing the brake pedal hard and holding it down for 30 seconds, release the brake pedal and check for leaks around the master cylinder pipe unions.
