To remove the tailgate lower trim panel, disconnect the lock wiring plug first then loosen the three screws holding the lock mechanism to the tailgate and pull the lock out. Next, open the tailgate to remove the exterior handle (undo the 4 screws and pull the handle assembly from position, being sure to disconnect the wiring plug as the handle is pulled out of position). For refitting, go through the steps backwards.
