Volvo V50 Driveshaft

The essence of the Volvo V50 Driveshaft is to transmit engine torque to remote drive components and give the remainder of the drive components freedom to move. The Driveshaft is a rotating power bridge that transmits mechanical force and rotation between the gearbox and other components that are too distant to be directly connected within the small Volvo platform, and it uses its long tubular shape to penetrate the gap without creating extra mass, which would adversely affect response. Throughout each voyage, it is subjected to severe torsion and shear, thus its metal has to be hard but light enough that inertia is low. To allow inevitable changes in alignment due to bumps, cornering, and suspension travel, the designers incorporate flexible couplings, including universal joints, jaw couplings or rag joints, and may also include splined or prismatic elements, which slide in and out as the distances vary. There have been a pair of primary Driveshaft designs seen during the life of the V50 line, a simple one-piece design that is appropriate in front-wheel-drive models, and a multi-joint propeller design that also incorporates additional couplings as the model requires more articulation, but again both of these designs are designed to ensure smooth flow of power. The only difference is the quantity of joints applied and the more complicated structure is able to provide more movement and not compromise on strength. This intelligent combination of hardness and softness gives all Volvo cabins the experience of quiet, vibration-free acceleration, which supports the responsive nature that drivers anticipate in a modern Volvo.

Volvo V50 Driveshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit a driveshaft safely and correctly on Volvo V50?
    A:
To remove the driveshaft, apply the handbrake firmly and chock the rear wheels, which will ensure that the car is resting on its wheels for safety's sake when loosening or tightening the driveshaft bolt. Access the driveshaft bolt by removing the wheel trim or centre cap, if you are not able to do this remove the wheel and fit the spare. With help of assistant pressing brake pedal, slacken the driveshaft retaining bolt with socket and long extension bar, noting that this bolt is extremely tight. Loosen the front wheel nuts, jack up the front end of the car and place on axle stands before removing the front roadwheel and the undershield of the engine by undoing the Torx screws. Remove the previously slackened driveshaft retaining bolt and discard as this is to be replaced with a new one. Tap the end of the driveshaft into the wheel hub, unbolt the anti-roll bar link rod from the suspension struts and remove the brake hose and ABS wiring harness from their brackets. Slacken the lower control arm balljoint nut and remove the balljoint from the hub carrier with a separator tool. Push down on the suspension arm to release the balljoint shank, swivel the suspension strut and hub carrier assembly outwards and withdraw the driveshaft CV joint in the hub flange. For the left-hand driveshaft, loosen the inner CV joint from the transmission with care, and for the right-hand driveshaft, take off the intermediate shaft support bearing cover and pull the intermediate shaft out of the transmission. Refitting is done in reverse of the removing steps and care is taken to clean and lubricate the splines of the CV joints, push the inner CV joint all the way into the transmission, put on a new driveshaft-to-hub retaining bolt, put on the same wheel that was used to loosen the driveshaft bolt and tighten all the nuts and bolts to the required torque including the driveshaft bolt with a torque wrench followed by an angle-tightening gauge. Finally fit the alloy wheel back if fitted and tighten the roadwheel nuts to the specified torque.
