Volvo S70 Throttle Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and adjust the throttle cable on Volvo S70?
    A:
This process is not possible with later models, with the Motronic ME7 system, as the throttle butterfly is electronically controlled, and has no cable. To remove the accelerator cable, first undo the screw and remove the cover over the accelerator cable drum and linkage. Next, let go of the outer cable retaining clip from the cable adjuster and unhook the inner cable from the drum. Remove the trim or soundproofing panel underneath the driver's side facia, pull the inner cable through the end of the pedal and slide the split bush off the end of the cable. For the manual transmission models, disengage the cable grommet from the bulkhead and pull the cable into the engine compartment, noting its path and releasing it from any clips or ties. For automatic transmission models, disconnect the wiring connector from the kickdown switch at the bulkhead entry by depressing the switch lugs with a screwdriver pushing the cable through and again take note of the routing before removing the cable. To refit, work backward using the removal procedures, making sure that on automatic transmission models the kickdown switch lugs are fully engaged in the bulkhead and the switch wiring connector is vertical. For adjustment, you should check that the cable drum is seated against the idle stop on the drum bracket, and that the throttle lever is against the adjusting screw. If not, loosen the link rod balljoint locknut so the link rod can easily slide, put in place the drum and throttle lever and then tighten the locknut. Reconnect the inner cable to the drum, snap the outer cable in the retaining clip, and adjust the cable at the adjuster to make sure it is tight but not so tight that the drum does not close onto the idle stop. Finally, step on the accelerator pedal to the floor and determine whether the drum hits the full-load stop.
