Volvo S70 Intake Manifold

The Volvo S70 Intake Manifold is important as it uniformly distributes fresh air, or fuel mixed with air, to each of the cylinders to enable the engine to build a powerful engine with steady combustion. Even the initial years of Volvo production adhered to a pattern of cast aluminum runners that clamped together in the upper and lower halves and sealed to the head with gaskets that should remain airtight to prevent a lean mixture, rough idle, or oil spills. Since efficiency requirements increased, subsequent Volvo models applied lightweight composite plastic that reduces mass, dissipates heat much faster, and keeps the entering charge cooler to enhance the quality of the burn. The Intake Manifold, no matter which material, has passages where the coolant is introduced and mounting points where sensors are installed, like the engine coolant temperature and air charge temperature sensors, which are sensed by the control computer to adjust spark and fuel in fine detail. All S70 designs follow multiport fuel injection, thus fuel is mixed with the airflow at the ends of each runner; however, the design principles below, which are applicable to throttle body and direct injection designs, explain why uniform flow is mandatory. Other versions use variable length runners to ensure the path length is varied to take advantage of Helmholtz resonance to increase low RPM torque without compromising top end horsepower. The Intake Manifold has also assisted all engines in this family to offer balanced performance, sound drivability, and enhanced fuel economy through selective turbulence to dislodge the fuel droplets and the securing of gasketed joints, thus clarifying the brand's emphasis on unremitting refinement and explaining why Volvo powerplants remain both responsive and enduring.

Volvo S70 Intake Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be observed before working on the Intake Manifold in the fuel system on Volvo S70?
    A:
Before processing any part in the fuel circuit, note the precautions. Turn off the battery with the negative lead and the air intake duct from the throttle housing and, if applicable, turbocharger inlet ducting. Remove cover over accelerator cable drum and linkage, release outer cable retaining clip and unhook inner cable. For easing the early models undo the bolts holding the fuel pipe clamps and remove them, then extract the fuel rail and injectors. Disconnect the wiring connector at the throttle housing, idle air control valve hoses and control valve wiring connector. Detach the brake servo vacuum hose, EGA hoses and any other vacuum hoses from the front of the intake manifold, together with any of the vacuum hoses connecting to outside services if any. Release wiring harness from intake manifold cable clamps, undo bolt holding dipstick tube and bolt holding intake manifold to steady bracket. Slacken the lower retaining bolts a couple of turns and all the upper bolts then lift the intake manifold upwards, feeding the ventilation hose from the crankcase through the ducts if applicable. If the intake manifold fails to lift, make sure the gasket has not stuck to the face of the intake manifold. Once you have removed the intake manifold, remove the lower bolts and gasket. If needed, remove the remaining components on the intake manifold. For engines with a variable venturi inlet system, inspect the flap valves and spindles, ensuring they operate perfectly, and contact a Volvo dealer to fix them if problems arise. To refit, reverse the removal operations using a new intake manifold gasket and new seals and O-rings for the injectors if needed. Set the intake manifold gasket to their position on the cylinder head, install the bolts of the lower intake manifold by turning a few times before installing the intake manifold, and check whether the crankcase ventilation hose is in place. Finally, tighten the bolts to the recommended torque setting and refit and adjust the accelerator cable, if applicable.
