Volvo S70 Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What is the process of crankshaft refitting in engine reassembly after an overhaul on Volvo S70?
    A:
Crankshaft refitting is the first step of engine reassembly after an overhaul, assuming that the cylinder block/crankcase and crankshaft have been cleaned, examined and repaired if necessary. Hold the cylinder block on a clean level worksurface with the crankcase facing upwards. Remove any old bearing shells on the block and intermediate section if they are still there. Clean the main bearing shell seats in the crankcase and the backs of the bearing shells, and insert the selected upper shells into their proper positions, making sure the tangs go into the recesses. Liberally lubricate the bearing shells in the crankcase with clean engine oil, wipe clean the crankshaft journals, and lower the crankshaft into position to be sure not to disturb the bearing shells. Inject oil into the crankshaft oilways and wipe off any excess oil from the crankshaft and intermediate section mating faces. Apply a thin even coat of Volvo liquid gasket solution to the cylinder block mating face of the intermediate section, making sure to cover the entire mating face. Clean the main bearing shell seats in the intermediate section and the ends of the backs of the bearing shells, and insert the selected lower shells into the correct positions, and press them home to engage the tangs. Lightly grease the bearing shells in the middle section but no oil in the liquid gasket solution. Lay the intermediate part on the crankshaft and cylinder block, insert the retaining bolts and tighten them in proper sequence and torque. Rotate the crankshaft, anticipating a small amount of resistance with new components, but being sure there are no tight spots or binding. It is advisable that a Crankshaft end float should be checked at this stage, i.e. if the Thrust surfaces have been checked, and new bearing shells are fitted, the Crankshaft end float should be within specification. Lubricate the back of an oil seal where it will be fitted, the crank and a new oil seal, and fit the seal with the lips inwards, using a piece of tube, or the old seal inverted, to tap it into position until flush.
