How to remove and refit the front and rear bumpers on Volvo S40?

The bumpers have several sections and after removing the bumper assembly further dismantling can occur. For advice as to which sections can be purchased separately, please consult a Volvo dealer. To remove the front bumper, open the bonnet and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Underneath the car, remove the tabs or screws that hold the lower baffle to the radiator support bracket. Press in the centre pins and remove the 5 plastic expansion rivets on the top edge of the bumper, then undo the Torx bolt on the centre of each end of the bumper at the top edge. Next, undo the 5 screws or bolts holding the bumper in place to the wheel arch liner on each side. If applicable, carefully prise the headlamp washer jet covers from the bumper, pull them forwards gently, press up the clip in the underside and remove the covers. With assistance, pull the bumper sides outwards a little to release the clips and then pull it forward and out of the vehicle, taking note of where it was fitted and disconnecting the various wiring plugs as the bumper is pulled out. If the bumper is not readily coming out of the clips under the headlights, take off the headlights and remove the catches with a screwdriver. Refitting of the front bumper is a reversal of the removal process, being sure to align with surrounding body panels. For S40 models, open the boot lid and undo these screws at each side of the boot lid aperture, and undo the 2 screws on the underside of the bumper and the 5 screws on each side which hold the bumper to the wheel arch liner. With help, draw the bumper sides outwards slightly to pull out the clips at the top edge and push it backwards and remove it from the vehicle, noting their positions when fitted and disconnecting any wiring plugs. For V50 models, open the tailgate and undo the screw at each side of the tailgate aperture, undo the 2 screws on the underside of the bumper and 5 screws on each side securing the bumper to the wheel arch liner. With help, draw the bumper sides outwards slightly to pull out the clips at the top edge and push it backwards and remove it from the vehicle, noting their positions when fitted and disconnecting any wiring plugs. Refitting the rear bumper for all models is a reversal of removal so as to ensure proper alignment with surrounding body panels.
