How to remove and refit the Engine Control Module on the automatic transmission ECU on Volvo S70?

The automatic transmission ECU, fuel ECU, and ignition ECU are in the ECU box on the front right-hand side of the engine compartment, in front of the cooling system expansion tank. To remove the ECU make sure the ignition is off, wipe the top of the ECU box lid to avoid leaving dirt inside, release the catch on the side of the lid, and lift it off. Then, pull the locking lever on top of the ECU forwards and withdrawal from slot three of the box, nearest to the right-hand wheel arch. For refitting, find the ECU in the box, engaging it with the connector at the base of the ECU, push down the locking lever to secure it and refit the module box lid. If you are installing a new ECU, adapt the throttle position sensor signal by chocking up all four wheels and applying the handbrake. Start the engine, move selector lever to D (Drive) position, depressing brake pedal firmly, fully depress accelerator pedal for 5 seconds (to close the kickdown switch), then release the accelerator and move selector lever to P (Park) position, the new throttle position sensor signal is stored in the ECU memory. Finally, turn off the engine and take the wheel chocks away.

What precautions should be taken before starting work on the Engine Control Module and where is the automatic transmission ECU located on Volvo V40?

The automatic transmission ECU is housed in the passenger compartment at the rear of the facia/centre console. Make sure that the ignition is off before you start work because the ECU can be damaged if the wiring plug is disconnected while the ignition is on. Wait for a further two minutes to make sure that the transmission main relay is completely de-energised and if the engine cooling fan is running when the engine is switched off wait for it to stop and then wait for a further two minutes. Begin by taking out the radio/cassette or storage bin from the centre console, and then the ashtray. Unclip trim panel from right hand side of centre console. The ECU is mounted on a bracket that is fixed by four bolts, remove these bolts and remove the ECU and bracket from beneath the facia. Disconnect the ECU wiring connector and carefully remove the ECU from the car without touching the ECU connector pins, which will damage the ECU by static electricity. For refitting, follow the process in reverse. If a new ECU is installed, adapt it to the throttle position sensor signal, by switching on the ignition without starting the engine, depressing the accelerator pedal fully to activate the kickdown switch for five seconds, and then releasing the pedals to store the new throttle position sensor signal in the ECU memory, and then switching off the ignition.

Wait for a further two minutes to make sure that the transmission main relay is completely de-energised and if the engine cooling fan is running when the engine is switched off wait for it to stop and then wait for a further two minutes. Begin by taking out the radio/cassette or storage bin from the centre console, and then the ashtray. Unclip trim panel from right hand side of centre console. The ECU is mounted on a bracket that is fixed by four bolts, remove these bolts and remove the ECU and bracket from beneath the facia. Disconnect the ECU wiring connector and carefully remove the ECU from the car without touching the ECU connector pins, which will damage the ECU by static electricity. For refitting, follow the process in reverse. If a new ECU is installed, adapt it to the throttle position sensor signal, by switching on the ignition without starting the engine, depressing the accelerator pedal fully to activate the kickdown switch for five seconds, and then releasing the pedals to store the new throttle position sensor signal in the ECU memory, and then switching off the ignition.
