Volvo Clutch Slave Cylinder

The Volvo Clutch Slave Cylinder converts the pedal pressure into a precise hydraulic movement that separates the clutch plates for smooth gear changes. Volvo commenced the production of vehicles in 1927 in Gothenburg and has continued to establish its name for safety, adopting the three-point seat belt, reliable brakes, and easy ergonomic controls that help drivers maintain their confidence on any road. The company experiments with electric powertrains and plug-in hybrids, combining clean Scandinavian design with forward-looking technology that keeps emissions low and comfort high. Whether it is building durable trucks, city buses, or elegant passenger cars, Volvo is focused on reliability, and all its components work in harmony in its carefully designed systems to maintain the brand's great heritage of durability and driver protection. At the center of this dedication to smooth performance is the Clutch Slave Cylinder, a small hydraulic component that receives pressurized fluid from the master cylinder, exerts force on a rod or concentric bearing against the release fork, and then frees the clutch disc in one quick movement. When replaced for older cable linkages, the Clutch Slave Cylinder eliminates constant adjustments, cuts down on pedal effort, and is resistant to debris when housed in a concentric layout. Its universal design philosophy means that it supports the wider Volvo lineup, ensuring consistency of shift feel and longer part life across generations. Each Clutch Slave Cylinder helps to strengthen Volvo's drivetrains by keeping first gear engagements clean and preventing grinding.

Volvo Clutch Slave Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How should the Clutch Slave Cylinder be replaced and reinstalled in a hydraulic system on Volvo S70?
    A:
The internal parts of the slave cylinder cannot be obtained separately, and repair and overhaul are not possible, and in case of hydraulic system fault or any indication of fluid leakage, the unit is better replaced. Begin by unscrewing the hydraulic pipe union on the slave cylinder and carefully remove the pipe making sure to have a container and rags to catch any spilled fluid and cover the open pipe union to keep dirt out. Next, remove the retaining circlip and remove the unit from the transmission. For later models, you first need to remove the transmission, since you can't get at the internal slave cylinder any other way. Remove the rubber seal from the transmission and move it inward down the pipe. At the face of the transmission, remove the locking clip which holds the slave cylinder outer assembly and pull it away from the inner pipe. Remove the two mounting bolts holding the cylinder and release bearing assembly to the transmission, and remove the assembly while passing the fluid pipe through the aperture in the transmission. To refit, reverse the removal operations, making sure to tighten the release bearing assembly mounting bolts to the specified torque, use new seals for quick-release pipe fittings, reattach the transmission, if removed, and bleed the clutch hydraulic system on completion.
  • Q: Can the internal components of a Clutch Slave Cylinder be purchased separately, and is it feasible to repair or overhaul the cylinder on Volvo V70?
    A:
Stave cylinder internal components are not available separately, and no repair or overhaul of the cylinder is possible. In the event of a hydraulic system fault or any sign of fluid leakage, the unit should be renewed. To remove the transmission, the internal slave cylinder cannot be removed with the transmission in place. Release the rubber seal from the transmission and move it inwards down the pipe. Prise out the clip and disconnect the fluid pipe junction from the pipe. Remove the two mounting bolts securing the cylinder and release bearing assembly to the transmission, and remove the assembly, feeding the fluid pipe in through the transmission aperture. For refitting, reverse the removal operations, ensuring to tighten the release bearing assembly mounting bolts to the specified torque, use new seals when refitting the quick-release pipe connections, refit the transmission, and bleed the clutch hydraulic system upon completion.
