Remove the alternator and set it on a clean work surface with the pulley facing down. Undo cover nuts and screw(s) and then lift the plastic cover at the back of the alternator by prising off the plastic cap, undoing the two nuts and one screw and lifting off the plastic cover. Carefully untighten the three screws and lift the voltage regulator/brush holder off. Measure the free length of brushes and check the measure against the specifications, renew the module if the brushes are worn down to below the minimum limit. Clean and examine the surfaces of the slip rings at the end of the alternator shaft and if it is excessively worn or damaged, the alternator needs to be renewed. Reassemble the alternator in reverse following the dismantling procedure.

Refitting is a reverse procedure and care should be taken to tighten fasteners to specified torque. On diesel models the alternator drive pulley is equipped with a one-way clutch the alternator shaft requires a special tool to hold it while unscrewing the pulley.
