Volvo 960 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to test and remove/install the ignition coil in the EZ115K, EZ116K, EZ129K, and REX-1 systems for EZK and REX-1 distributor ignition systems on Volvo 960?
    A:
To test the EZ115K and EZ116K systems first disconnect the negative battery cable from the system and remove the appropriate fuse from the fuse box, and this should be done whenever any connector to or from the ECU is handled. Next, the air cleaner assembly and the connector of the power stage to remove the rubber cover to get to the terminals, make sure to avoid testing from the front not to damage the terminals. For primary winding test, connect an ohmmeter between power stage amplifier connector terminal 1 and terminal 15 of ignition coil and check for a resistance of 0.6-1.0 ohms, if it is low, replace ignition coil and if it is high, check wire between ignition coil and power stage amplifier connector terminal 1. For the secondary winding test, connect an ohmmeter between terminal 1 of the power stage amplifier and the ignition coil high tension terminal, and a reading of 6.5 - 9.0 kilohms is expected. In the case of the EZ129K system, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the air cleaner assembly and connect an ohmmeter between the primary windings connectors; you should see a resistance of 0.5-1.5 ohms. For secondary winding test connect an ohmmeter between one of the connectors of the primary windings and the coil wire tower with a resistance value of 8-9 kilohms. In the REX-1 system, make sure that the ignition switch is OFF, remove the air cleaner assembly, unplug the connectors, and test the resistance between the ignition coil terminals and look for 0.5 ohms between low voltage terminals and a voltage of about 5000 ohms between the high tension terminal and a low voltage terminal. Check the presence of voltage at the ignition coil/power stage unit and verify ground connections, resistance should be not more than 0.1 ohm. For removal and installation of ignition coil of the EZ115K and EZ116K system, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the air cleaner assembly, disconnect and tag the coil primary leads, carefully remove coil wire before removing the ignition coil. For installation, you can reverse the process. In the case of the EZ129K system, take similar steps, including unplugging the power stage connector. For the REX-1 system, make sure to disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the air cleaner assembly and unplug the connections before removing the ignition coil and power stage and installing backwards.
