Volvo 940 Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Is sodium-based grease compatible with lithium-based grease, and what precautions should be taken when handling and maintaining wheel bearings on Volvo 940?
    A:
Sodium-based grease is not compatible with lithium-based grease, so it's important to read package labels and avoid mixing the two types together. If there is any doubt of the type of grease that is used, remove the old grease thoroughly from the bearing and hub before replacing it. When working with bearings, remember to clean all the dirt from the housing, be very careful with used bearings, clean up the tools, be in a clean environment, and wear clean, dry gloves or dry hands. Clean solvents and flushing fluids are very essential, and clean paper should be used for drying bearings. Protect the disassembled bearings against rust and dirt by covering them, and use lint-free rags when wiping. Store bearings in oil-proof paper when not in use and clean the inside of the housing before replacing bearing. Avoid working in dirty surroundings, using damaged tools, working on wood surfaces, working with dirty hands, using gasoline for cleaning, spinning bearings with compressed air, using dirty cloths, scratching bearing surfaces or allowing bearings to come into contact with dirt or rust. The front wheel bearings on rear drive Volvo models require periodic maintenance using a premium high melting point grease and the long fiber type greases should not be used. 30,000 miles (48,000 km) recommended service. To replace and dismount wheel bearings, it is necessary to remove the wheel bearing, wash all parts with non-flammable solvent and air dry them with only non-flammable rags. Check for excessive wear and damage, replacing the bearing as required. Packing wheel bearings with grease is best accomplished using a wheel bearing packer, but if not available can be accomplished by hand, by placing a glob of grease in one palm, forcing the edge of the wheel bearing into the glob, filling the space between the rollers and the bearing cage, rotating the bearing and forcing the grease through, and continuing until grease is forced out the other side. Finally, lay the packed bearing on a clean surface and cover it till the time of installation and install the wheel bearing.
  • Q: How to remove and install rear wheel bearings that are sealed, pressed-in units on Volvo 940?
    A:
The rear wheel bearings are sealed pressed in units and no adjustment is available. For removal and installation, in order to avoid interference from the lifting arms, first start by loosening the rear axle nut while the vehicle is placed on all four wheels. Remove the wheels, followed by the brake caliper which should be hung out of the way by a piece of wire. Next, remove the brake disc and parking brake shoes, disconnect the parking brake cable from the wheel bearing housing and remove the retaining bolt for the support arm, knocking it loose. Proceed to remove the nut and bolt holding the lower link arm to the housing, and then the retaining bolt for the track rod, which can be removed using a small claw type puller. After the axle nut and the retaining nut for the upper link have been removed, the wheel bearing housing can be withdrawn as a whole, together with any shims that are in use. Mount the housing assembly in a vise, on a counterhold tool press out the hub, remove the circlip to press the bearing out, be sure to press against the inner race. Use a bearing puller to extract the inner race from the hub. For the installation, press the new bearing into the housing, and make sure to press the press tool only against the outer race, and then install the circlip. Support the inner race and press the hub into the bearing, and install the wheel bearing housing onto the housing, and secure the axle nut hand tight. Install the shims and retaining nut at the upper link and at the top push the housing outwards and tighten the upper link arm nut to the specified torque. Tilt the bearing housing where necessary to refit the lower link arm and its holding bolt, tightening it to the specified torque plus an extra number of rotations. Install the support arm and track rod, tightening to specified torque, re-install parking brake cable, brake shoes, brake disc and caliper and put the wheels back on and lower the vehicle. Finally, with all four wheels on the ground, tighten the axle nut to the specified torque + some rotation. For certain models, follow the same steps with some small changes in the process, making sure to mark the position of the brake disk, use the right tools for suspension compression and replace the bearing whenever the hub is pressed out. After installation, check all the connections are tightened to the specified torque values and that the parking brake is connected and adjusted.
