Volvo 760 Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install wheel bearings on Volvo 760?
    A:
The operation of removing and fitting Axle Shafts on vehicles with multi-link rear suspensions will require that care be given to the position of the components and to the bolt tightening values to ensure ride quality and rear wheel alignment. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and safely raising and supporting the vehicle without interference from the vehicle lifting device. Remove the wheels then detach the brake caliper by unbolting it and hang it with wire. Mark the location of the brake disc relative to its locating pin and then the brake shoes before removing the brake disc. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the wheel bearing housing, and then remove the support arm retaining bolt and knock the support arm loose. Next pull out the nut and bolt that held the lower link arm to the housing and then the track rod retaining bolt using claw type puller for removal. Loosen and remove the large nut securing the driveshaft in the bearing housing and the retaining nut for the upper link, so that the wheel bearing housing can be removed as a whole together with any shims present. Hold the housing assembly in a vise, insert a counterhold tool between the hub and bearing housing, and push the hub out using an appropriate drift. Remove the circlip retaining the bearing in the housing, then press the bearing out using a counterhold tool and drift using the drift against the inside of the ring. Use a bearing puller and counterhold to pull the inner ring from the hub. For installation, force in the new bearing using the drift and counterhold and install the circlip. Using a counterhold below the inner ring, press the hub into place followed by installation of the wheel bearing housing into the driveshaft and installation of the retaining nut without tighten it. Place shims between the upper link and the housing, then install the retaining nut in the upper link. At the top of this, pull the housing outwards and tighten the upper link arm nut to 85 ft. lbs. (116 Nm) to ensure correct wheel alignment. Tilt the bearing housing as required to refit the lower link arm and its holding bolt, pulling the housing inwards and tightening the link arm to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) plus another 90 degrees of rotation. Install the support arm and the bolt that goes with it-tighten the nut to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees of rotation-and then install the track rod and tighten to 63 ft. lbs. (86 Nm). Reinstall the parking brake cable, then brake shoes, brake disc marked, brake caliper, caliper mounting bolts tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm). Finally, install the wheel, tightening the lugs to 60-62 ft. lbs. (82-85 Nm), lower the vehicle and tighten the axle nut to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm) + 60 degrees of rotation.
  • Q: Is sodium-based grease compatible with lithium-based grease, and what precautions should be taken when handling and maintaining wheel bearings on Volvo 760?
    A:
Sodium-based grease is not compatible with lithium-based grease, so it's important to read package labels and avoid mixing the two types together. If there is any doubt of the type of grease that is used, remove the old grease thoroughly from the bearing and hub before replacing it. When working with bearings, remember to clean all the dirt from the housing, be very careful with used bearings, clean up the tools, be in a clean environment, and wear clean, dry gloves or dry hands. Clean solvents and flushing fluids are very essential, and clean paper should be used for drying bearings. Protect the disassembled bearings against rust and dirt by covering them, and use lint-free rags when wiping. Store bearings in oil-proof paper when not in use and clean the inside of the housing before replacing bearing. Avoid working in dirty surroundings, using damaged tools, working on wood surfaces, working with dirty hands, using gasoline for cleaning, spinning bearings with compressed air, using dirty cloths, scratching bearing surfaces or allowing bearings to come into contact with dirt or rust. The front wheel bearings on rear drive Volvo models require periodic maintenance using a premium high melting point grease and the long fiber type greases should not be used. 30,000 miles (48,000 km) recommended service. To replace and dismount wheel bearings, it is necessary to remove the wheel bearing, wash all parts with non-flammable solvent and air dry them with only non-flammable rags. Check for excessive wear and damage, replacing the bearing as required. Packing wheel bearings with grease is best accomplished using a wheel bearing packer, but if not available can be accomplished by hand, by placing a glob of grease in one palm, forcing the edge of the wheel bearing into the glob, filling the space between the rollers and the bearing cage, rotating the bearing and forcing the grease through, and continuing until grease is forced out the other side. Finally, lay the packed bearing on a clean surface and cover it till the time of installation and install the wheel bearing.
