Volvo 760 Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Crankshaft Timing Gear and Timing Chain on Volvo 760?
    A:
To remove and install the 2.8L 6-cylinder engine, remove the timing chain cover, set the engine to TDC of the No. 1 cylinder. Next, disconnect the oil pump sprocket and drive chain and loosen the tension in both of the Camshaft timing chains by turning each tensioner lock by 1.5 turns counterclockwise while pushing the rubbing block piston. Remove both of the chain tensioners and the 2 curved and 2 straight chain damper/runners. Take out camshaft sprocket retaining bolt (10mm Allen head) and sprocket and chain assembly, doing the same for the other side. For installation, install the chain tensioners first and tighten them to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm), then the curved chain damper/runners that are tightened to 7-11 ft. lbs. (10-15 Nm) and the straight chain damper/runners tightened to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm). Beginning with the driver's side camshaft sprocket and chain, turn the crankshaft until the crankshaft key is pointing at the driver's side camshaft with the key groove at 12 o'clock. Place the chain on the driver's side sprocket making sure the sprocket notch mark is centred between the 2 white lines on the chain and place the chain on the crankshaft sprocket, aligning the other white line with the crankshaft sprocket notch. While holding the drivers side chain and sprockets in place, install the sprocket and chain on the drivers side camshaft making sure the chain is stretched on the tension side and the sprocket pin fits into the camshaft recess. Using a suitable tool, tighten the sprocket center bolt to 51-59 ft. lbs. (69-80 Nm) so that the cam does not rotate. For the passenger side camshaft sprocket and chain, rotate the crankshaft in the clockwise direction until the crankshaft key is pointing straight down (6 o'clock) and the camshaft key groove is halfway between the 8 and 9 o'clock positions, which will rock the No. 6 cylinder rocker arms. Place the chain on the passenger side sprocket, making sure it is centered between the 2 white lines, and then place the chain on middle crankshaft sprocket, making sure it is centered between the crankshaft sprocket notch and the other white line. Install the sprocket and chain on the camshaft (make sure the sprocket notch fits into the camshaft recess) and secure the sprocket nut at 51-59 ft. lbs. (69-80 Nm). Rotate the chain tensioners 1/4 turn clockwise each, tension the chains by rotating the crankshaft 2 full turns clockwise, and check the alignment marks again. Finally, install the oil pump sprocket and chain and the timing chain cover.
