  Q: How to safely remove and install the rear sway bar and shock absorbers on Volvo 760?

  To start, lift the vehicle up and support it safely, with the stands on the rear jacking points, remove the wheels. To remove the lower sway bar, use a floor jack to lift the rear axle enough to unload the Shock Absorbers and then remove the lower shock retaining bolts and the nuts that hold the sway bar to the brackets to allow for the sway bar to be removed. For installation, attach both the bracket nut and lower shock retaining bolt hand tightening, snug all four mounting points prior to tightening the bracket nuts with 35 ft lbs. or 48 Nm and shock absorber bolts with 63 ft lbs. or 86 Nm. After jacking the vehicle up out of the axle, re-install the wheels, if removed, and lower the vehicle. For the 1995-98 960/S90/V90 and AWD V70 Series models, lift and support the vehicle, remove the wheels and the nut and through-bolt securing the sway bar to the support arm, and then the nuts securing the bracket retainer to the axle beam, and the sway bar is lowered. When installing, connect the sway bar with the axle beam (nuts tightened to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)), connect to the support arm, and connect the through bolt and nut without tightening. After you have reinstalled the wheels and lowered it to the ground, tighten the support arm bolts to 63ft. lbs. (80Nm) with all four wheels on the ground. For the 850, C70, S70 and V70 Series, raise and support the vehicle, remove the left hand rubber silencer mount and secure it with a tie wrap, remove the outer transverse arm mount nut and bolt. With the right side transverse arm mount position, mark the position of the right side transverse arm mount in relation to the left hand transverse arm hole, make sure it is in the right position and the other mount bolt is removed. Next, take off the anti-sway bar mount bolts and the bar. For installation, use new nuts and bolts for the anti-sway bar, without tightening completely, then connect the transverse arm mount to the Trailing Arm with new bolts and nuts, starting with the inner bolt aligned with the mark, tightening enough to hold it in position before putting on the outer bolt and nut, tightening to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and angle tightening 120 degrees. Finally, tighten the bolts for the anti-sway bar, with the tighten on the right side bolts 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), the left side forward bolt tighten at an angle of 90 degrees, tighten at 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the left side rear bolt tighten at 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) with an angle tighten of 90 degrees. Cut the tie wrap keeping the silencer and reinstall the rubber mount then lower the vehicle.
