The center support bearing must rotate freely without noise or bearing binding, if it is noisy or binding it needs to be replaced as it is not a serviceable component. For replacement purpose, a press with suitable blocks and sleeves is needed. Start by removing the front driveshaft and center bearing assembly, then pushing the bearing out of the rubber mount, and making sure to keep it attached to the driveshaft. Use a drift or press to slide the bearing off the drive shaft, being careful not to damage the dust cover. Install the new bearing by pressing it on the shaft and then install the rubber mount making sure it is correctly placed. Reassemble the driveshift halves, lightly greasing dry splines with grease. When reinstalling, ensure that the spring and washer are in the right position in the rubber mount, and that the bearing is centered in the mounts, before final tightening. For the other vehicles except the 240, support the vehicle on jackstands and mark the location of the driveshaft yokes for assembly. Remove the nuts and bolts holding the driveshaft sections, and drop the driveshaft and universal joint assembly as a unit when the support bearing housing has been removed. Pry up the lock washer and remove the support bearing retaining nut, then pull off the back section of the driveshaft. The support bearing can now be pressed off from the driveshaft and removed from its housing. Examine the driveshaft sections for straightness (not more than 0.010 inch [0.25mm] out of roundness) and the bearing that supports the driveshaft for binding. Install the support bearing in its housing and press the bearing onto the front driveshaft section so that the splined shaft of the rear section is enclosed. Pay attention to the position of the yokes in line to avoid driveline vibration. Position the driveshaft and the universal joint assembly to its flange and install but do not tighten the retaining nuts and bolts, and position the support bearing housing and tighten the retaining nut. Finally, drop the vehicle and do a road test to see if there are driveline vibrations.
