Volvo 740 Ignition Control Module

The Volvo 740 Ignition Control Module converts low-current signals into fast on-off primary coil switching, which ignites high-voltage sparks to provide the engine with reliable starts and steady operation. The module is mounted between the ignition switch circuitry and the coil and is fed a pulse either from a magnetic pickup or a Hall effect switch on the distributor on the older 740 line, or from a crankshaft position sensor on the later 740 of the same line. With a solid-state transistor, it switches the primary circuit of the coil on and off instantly; each time the magnetic field collapses, it increases the voltage to the tens of thousands of volts required to jump the spark plug gap, which increases combustion efficiency and power, and reduces fuel consumption and emissions. There were two predominant styles over the years. The former operates through a distributor on early Volvo units where initial timing is manually set and further advance is provided by mechanical weights and vacuum diaphragms, but the Ignition Control Module still drives the primary circuit much faster than breaker points of old and is never subject to point wear. The second style is applied in modern Volvo electronics, removing centrifugal and vacuum components and using crank and load sensor data to be commanded by a separate computer to provide entirely electronic timing, which is non-adjustable and remains accurate despite belt stretch or gear runout. Regardless of what version your Volvo has, a failed Ignition Control Module will cause coil switching to cease and the engine will not be able to start or spark.

Volvo 740 Ignition Control Module Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What steps are involved in removing and installing the ignition control module, power stage, and ignition coil on the REX-1 and EZ129K systems on Volvo 740?
    A:
The power stage on the REX-1 and EZ129K systems is combined with the ignition coil into one unit. Starting with the EZ115K and EZ116K systems, you should start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and disconnecting the power stage connector. Next, take the mounting bolt(s) off of the retaining bracket and the ignition coil and power stage should be removed. To install, put the coil and power stage back in place and tighten retaining bolts, plug in power stage connector and reattach negative battery cable.
