Disconnect the battery earth terminal, and then remove the clamping screw for the upper steering shaft joint in the engine compartment. Next remove the steering wheel and the covers of the upper steering columns, turn indicator switch, wiper switch, then disconnect the leads. Remove the housing for the switches from it, then remove the spring and column upper bearing, and then the steering column lock. You have to remove the rubber grommet of the bulkhead and the lower attachment for the steering column and push the steering column in through the bulkhead and pull it into the car. After that, take the steering lock off. The upper and lower bearings are renewable but any other wear or damage will require the replacement with a new steering column. Refitting is done in the reverse order of removal in order to maintain the setting dimensions. Finally, rotate the steering wheel to test for free rotation, reconnect the battery earth cable, and test the horn, indicators and windscreen wipers.
