The fuel tank, which is placed at the back of the car and is intended for fuel evaporative control should be emptied by syphoning. To remove the tank, withdraw the floor panel in Estate models from the boot or load area, disconnect all hoses and electrical leads and unscrew the mounting screws, cut around the sealing mastic and lift out the tank. In the case of vehicles which have a fuel evaporative control system, fumes from the tank are stored in a canister filled with activated charcoal until the engine is started at which point the fumes and vapour are drawn into the inlet manifold or duct and combusted in the normal engine cycle. Maintenance is low, just the infrequent checking of security of connecting hoses. Reinstalling the tank means reversing the process of the removal, making sure that the sealing mastic at the edge of the fuel tank mounting is new.
