2011 Volvo V50 Oil Pan Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and refit the oil pan for 1.6 litre diesel engine on 2011 Volvo V50?
A: To remove the oil pan, first drain engine oil and firmly clean and refit the drain plug. If the engine is near to its service interval also remove the oil filter and replace it with a new one before re-filling the engine with fresh oil. Then apply the handbrake, jack up the front of the vehicle and let it rest on axle stands. Remove the engine under shield by undoing the Torx screws. Progressively slacken and remove all oil pan retaining bolts or nuts and store each bolt in the correct order by using a marked cardboard template to prevent them from being misplaced during reassembly. To break the joint, knock the oil pan with the palm of your hand and lower and remove it from under the car. If it is stuck, use a putty knife to ease it along the joint carefully until it is released. While the oil pan is off, examine the oil pump pick up or strainer for clogs or splits and clean or replace it if necessary. For refitting, remove any sealant from the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and oil pan and wipe out the oil pan and interior of the engine. If the oil pan was fitted without a gasket, make sure the mating surfaces are clean and dry, apply a thin coating of silicone sealant to the mating surface (make sure to apply inside areas of retaining bolt holes) and install the oil pan within 5 minutes. Refit the retaining bolts or nuts in their original positions, screwing them in evenly and incrementally to the recommended torque setting. At last, lower the vehicle to the ground and refill the engine with oil, after which a minimum of 2 hours after using sealant to start the engine.
