2009 Volvo S40 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the crankshaft seal at the timing chain end and the transmission end for 1.8 and 2.0 litre petrol engines on 2009 Volvo S40?
A: In order to change the timing chain end oil seal, first remove the timing chain pulley, which is also the crankshaft pulley. Use a screwdriver to carefully prise out the old oil seal in the timing cover without damaging the surfaces, when it's tight, you can drill 2 holes diagonally in it, insert self-tapping screws and pull it out with pliers. Clean the seating in the timing cover and the nose of the crankshaft and apply clean engine oil to the outer periphery and sealing lips of the new oil seal. Press it into the timing cover squarely, using a large socket or metal tubing to press it in until flush with the outer surface, keeping it square as it goes in, and wipe off excess oil. Finally, re-fit the crankshaft pulley. For the transmission end oil seal which must be replaced as a whole unit with the carrier, remove the transmission and the clutch assembly, then unbolt the flywheel and remove the sump. Undo the six retaining bolts to remove the oil seal carrier from the cylinder block, removing the gasket if required. Clean the seal housing and the crankshaft, removing any burrs or raised edges and degrease the mating surfaces carefully. Use a special sleeve for sliding the new seal over the shaft of the crankshaft, if not, make a guide of thin plastic, lubricate the lips of the seal and the shoulder of the crankshaft, and install the oil seal carrier, taking into account the alignment of the guide pins. Tighten the bolts in the correct order to the specified torque setting, removing any excess oil or grease and reassembling in reverse order checking for oil leakage on restarting the engine.
