2005 Volvo V50 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the crankshaft seal on the right-hand and left-hand sides for 2.0 and 2.4 litre 5-cylinder diesel engine on 2005 Volvo V50?
A: To replace the right hand oil seal, remove the timing belt from the timing belt pulley and then the crankshaft sprocket which may require a puller because the timing belt pulley is on a master spline, do not lever the timing belt pulley as this will damage it. The seal can be renewed without removing the oil pump by drilling a small hole into the outer edge of the seal and inserting a self-tapping screw which is then pulled out with pliers, care being taken not to damage the surface of the crankshaft. Protect the crankshaft by wrapping adhesive tape around the end of the crankshaft and dip the new seal in engine oil and drive the new seal into the oil pump housing until flush and the closed end is facing outwards. After removing the tape, reinstalled timing belt and crankshaft sprocket. For the left hand oil seal, you should remove the flywheel or driveplate, clean the surface of the block and the surface of the crankshaft, remove the old oil seal, which should be done in the same way as drilling a hole and pulling it out with a self-tapping screw before installation. Finally, put the flywheel or driveplate back on.
