1999 Volvo S70 Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and refit the strut mounting nut and the shock absorber retaining nut using special tools on 1999 Volvo S70?
A: To take out and refit the strut mounting nut and the shock absorber holding nut, Volvo special tools 999 5467, 5468 and 5469. Begin by removing the strut from the car, and then get spring compressors in place to catch at least six of the coils of the spring and having a locking mechanism so that they can't slip. Tighten the compressors until the load is off of the spring seats. By using tool 999 5467 unscrew strut mounting nut while holding the piston rod with tool 999 5468, then remove the nut and special washer. Next, use tool 999 5469 to unscrew the shock absorber retaining nut while you are holding the piston rod a second time with tool 999 5468. Remove the shock absorber retaining nut, upper mounting, spring seat, spring, bump stop and gaiter. Separate the bump stop from the gaiter, remove the stop washer from the bump stop. With the strut assembly disassembled, examine all the parts for wear, damage or deformation and replace any parts that are required. Check the shock absorber for fluid leakage and test the operation by moving the piston through full and short strokes, checking for smooth resistance. If there is any doubt of the condition of the coil spring, slowly release the spring compressor and observe if there is any distortion or cracking, when compared to a new component if necessary. Inspect all other components to make sure there is no damage or deterioration and replace any suspect parts. When fitting a new shock absorber, hold it vertically and pump the piston a few times in order to prime it. For reassembling, reverse the dismantling process, and you need to ensure that the spring is compressed to about 300 mm before fitting, and the ends of the spring are properly put into the upper and lower seats, and tighten the shock absorber retaining nut and strut mounting nut to the specified torque.
