1989 Volvo 244 Fuel Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to effectively clean and reassemble the Fuel Pump parts while ensuring proper function and avoiding wear on 1989 Volvo 244?
A: Thoroughly clean all the parts in paraffin, dry them off and examine each for signs of wear, especially on the rocker arm pin or bearing holes and the face of the cam lever and linkage between the cam lever and the diaphragm pull rod and renew any part which raises doubts. The diaphragm and pull rod assembly should be replaced if there are any signs of wear or cracking of the diaphragm. Make sure the sitting surface for the inlet valve spring is clean and smooth, and the port edges are free of burrs, and although the outlet valve cannot be removed, generally it does not cause problems, so make sure it is clean before you reassemble it. Assemble the car starting from lower body, install the cam lever and its pivot pin, and install the lever return spring. Assemble the diaphragm spring, seal and washer in original assembly and center the diaphragm in the return spring, engage the diaphragm pull rod with the lever, and the diaphragm holes with the holes on the body flange. Once in place, make sure the pull rod is seated properly in the lever fork and that it is all smooth and functioning. To fit the top half of the body: hold the diaphragm to the flange by pushing the lever to fit the upper half of the body, making sure the alignment marks on the two flanges match Insert the six screws and tighten them until the heads just engage with the spring washers while checking that the diaphragm is centred and does not overlap the edge. Finally, tighten the screws alternately until they are tight, replace the filter gauze, and refit the top cover using a new gasket, taking care not to overtighten the screw so as not to distort the top cover and cause leakage at the joint.
