After removing the rear roadwheels, completely slacken the handbrake cable adjustment nut. Then, undo the two nuts securing the exhaust catalytic converter to the centre silencer and the centre silencer mounting bracket nut. Use wire or string to suspend the catalytic converter from the vehicle body.

To remove the left- and right-hand cables, chock the front wheels and jack up the rear of the car. If removing the left-hand cable, take off the retaining screws and the fuel filter protective cover for access. Then, remove the rear section of the centre console and the rear seat cushion. Back off the cable adjuster nut for maximum freeplay, unhook the front end of the cable from the balancer plate, release the retaining clips, lift the carpet to access the cable guide, undo the retaining bolts, free the cable from its guide, and release the sealing grommet from the floor. From underneath, unhook the inner cable from the brake caliper lever and unclip the outer cable from its bracket, then remove the cable from the car.
