Volvo V70 Ignition Coil

Volvo V70 Ignition Coil provides the shock that allows all the cylinders to fire by increasing the ordinary voltage of a 12-volt battery to the tens of thousands of volts required to produce a spark. Each Ignition Coil has two insulated copper windings known as the primary and secondary windings that wrap an iron core in a hard epoxy case, and when the battery current in the primary is abruptly stopped, the collapsing magnetic field causes 15,000 to 40,000 volts to travel the spark-plug gap and ignite the fuel-air mixture. The first versions of Volvo applied only one coil which fed the distributor, i.e. one tower of high-tension current was taken down to each cylinder via long plug wires. Subsequent versions of the same model applied a waste spark coil pack; two cylinders would share one coil, where one spark would be applied whilst the other was wasted on an exhaust stroke. More recent V70 models transitioned to coil-on-plug or coil-near-plug designs, with each cylinder having its own small coil and no large leads to lose time much more rapidly and reduce losses. In these styles the principle remains the same, but the reduction of voltage drop by packaging increases idle smoothness and reduces emissions. Insulation is cracked by age, excessive heat, or wide plug gaps, or is corroded by high resistance, and a defective Volvo coil is indicated by the appearance of rough running, low mileage, or a red light on the dashboard. It can also cause an engine code and unequal power to be received by a fatigued Ignition Coil; hence performing routine electrical checks will ensure the Volvo power plants remain active.

OEM parts are the only choice for top quality and real functionality. They pass strict checks, and they match Volvo's factory specs, so installation is easy. Volvo V70 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the ignition coils on Volvo V70?
    A:
To remove the ignition coils on turbocharged engines, first undo the clamps and uncouple the charge air hose from the turbocharger to the intercooler found over the engine. Next, remove the two screws and release the two spring clips that hold the timing belt upper cover in place, and then remove the cover from the spark plug cover in the middle of the cylinder head. After that, take off the six retaining screws and raise the cover to reach the ignition coils. Begin with the coil nearest to the timing belt by disconnecting the wiring plug, it is good practice to work on one coil at a time, although if it is marked for position, all five can be removed at the same time. Unscrew the coil retaining bolt and remove the coil and HT cap from the hole in the cylinder head. For refitting, align the coil with the mounting bolt hole and push down firmly on the spark plug and then tighten the retaining bolt to the recommended torque. At last, push the wiring plug until it clicks into place, and finish up by working backward from the steps taken to remove it.
