Volvo V70 Clutch Master Cylinder

The Volvo V70 Clutch Master Cylinder translates your foot pressure on the clutch pedal into hydraulic force, allowing the gearbox to disengage smoothly and enable clean gear changes. This small hydraulic pump, located just in front of the firewall, has a piston inside it that slides forward when the pedal is pressed, forcing the brake fluid to compress and sending a high-pressure pulse along a sealed line to the slave cylinder, causing the release fork to move away and separate the clutch plate and the flywheel. During the production life of the model, there were two predominant styles of the Clutch Master Cylinder fitted to the V70; an early all-metallic body with a remote fluid reservoir and a subsequent composite unit that incorporates the reservoir, both using the same principle of operation. The metal design is rougher and heavier, but the integrated composite performs the same function while reducing weight; it is not prone to corrosion and is easier to assemble in later Volvo refinements, though it holds slightly less fluid and expands under high temperatures. The Clutch Master Cylinder should not contain air regardless of style, but a pinhole opening can allow air to enter, making the pedal spongy, pedal returns sticky, or causing a problem in shifting gears. The appearance of dampness around the pushrod, a decreasing level in the reservoir, and noisy engagement are signs of difficulties before damage occurs. Frequent maintenance keeps the component at constant hydraulic pressure, the shifts sharp, and the driving feel of the Volvo manual transmission model responsive and of high quality; Volvo is also known to be reliable.

Volvo V70 Clutch Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Can the Clutch Master Cylinder be repaired or overhauled, and what steps should be taken if a hydraulic system fault occurs on Volvo V70?
    A:
At the time of writing, master cylinder internal components are not available separately, making repair or overhaul impossible. In the event of a hydraulic system fault or visible fluid leakage around the master cylinder or clutch pedal, the unit should be renewed, and a Volvo dealer or specialist should be consulted. To remove the master cylinder, first undo the fasteners and take out the engine cross-stay from between the brackets on the front suspension turrets. Disconnect the brake fluid reservoir and servo wiring plugs, then move the loom aside. Remove the trim panel above the pedals by undoing two screws and pulling it rearwards. Prise off the retaining clip and pull the master cylinder pushrod from the pedal, then remove the clutch pedal position sensor. Working under the facia, undo the two nuts securing the master cylinder to the bulkhead. Prise out the clip and disconnect the pressure pipe union from the master cylinder, being prepared for fluid spillage, and cover the open pipe union with polythene and a rubber band to keep dirt out. Pull the master cylinder slightly away from the bulkhead, rotate it half a turn, and release the fluid supply hose from the retaining clip, using a clamp on the hose before disconnecting it from the master cylinder, again being prepared for fluid spillage and covering the open pipe union. Finally, remove the master cylinder from the engine compartment. For refitting, reverse the removal operations, ensuring to transfer the fluid supply hose from the old cylinder to the new one if a new master cylinder is being fitted, tighten the master cylinder retaining nuts to the specified torque, and bleed the clutch hydraulic system upon completion.
