Volvo V50 Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the Parking Brake Cable for the rear handbrake on Volvo V50?
    A:
To remove the rear handbrake cable, first loosen the rear wheel nuts and chock the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the car and support it on axle stands before removing the rear roadwheels. Completely slacken the handbrake cable adjustment nut, then undo the two nuts securing the exhaust catalytic converter to the centre silencer and the centre silencer mounting bracket nut, using wire or string to suspend the catalytic converter from the vehicle body. Detach the exhaust intermediate section rubber mounting and position the exhaust system to one side, suspending it with wire or string to prevent damage. Remove the heat shield from below the handbrake lever by undoing four plastic nuts, then remove the air baffle on the appropriate side by undoing two plastic nuts and one screw. Next, remove the heat shield above the rear/intermediate silencer by undoing seven plastic nuts. Depress the retaining clips to pull the outer cable fittings from the mounting bracket and detach the handbrake front inner cable from the equaliser bracket, then disconnect the inner cables from the calipers at the rear and withdraw the cable from under the vehicle, noting that the rear cable is only available as a complete assembly. For the front cable, remove the centre console, slacken and remove the handbrake adjusting nut at the lever, then undo the exhaust centre silencer mounting bracket bolt and the six plastic nuts to slide the heat shield above the silencer forwards for access to the cables. Detach the cable from the equaliser bracket at the rear and from the lever at the front, then refitting is a reversal of removal, ensuring to adjust the handbrake.
