Volvo S80 Steering Column Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the steering column on Volvo S80?
    A:
To remove the steering column, disconnect the battery negative lead first. Fully extend the steering column and take off the Steering Wheel. Undo the three screws from under the steering column lower shroud and then prise the upper and lower shrouds apart to free the retaining pegs. Remove the lower shroud and the upper shroud out of the way. Next, remove the trim panel beneath the facia on the driver's side held by two screws and disconnect the wiring plug from the footwell light. Disconnect the wiring plug, depress the clip and remove the transponder unit from the ignition switch. For automatic transmission models, turn the ignition switch to position I, press in the catch and pull the interlock cable from the side of the ignition switch. Disconnect the two wiring plugs, undo the two screws, release the two clips on the underside of the steering wheel and pull the steering wheel module away from the steering column. Remove the wiring loom guide from the underside of the column and hang it down. Undo the pinch-bolt at the universal joint on the intermediate steering column shaft, and pull the steering joint up from the lower shaft, discarding the bolt because a new one must be fitted. Loosen the four bolts that hold the column to the facia and pull the assembly backwards. Rotate the column assembly to the upside down position and manoeuvre it out of the vehicle. If needed, you will need to drill out the security screws and remove the steering lock from the column, since no further dismantling of the assembly is suggested. For refitting, perform the process in reverse while making sure to lubricate the intermediate shaft splines with grease before putting the steering column into engagement, then tighten the rearmost column retaining bolts, use a new universal joint pinch-bolt, and if refitting the steering lock, tighten the new security screws until their heads snap off. On automatic models when fitting the interlock cable, ensure that the selector lever is in position P and the ignition switch in position I and check for correct connection before removing the ignition key and check that the selector lever is locked in position. For models with the dynamic stability and traction control system, a recalibration is required following the refitting of the column, which could be carried out in the workshop using Volvo's special test equipment or by driving the car for at least 20 miles on smooth roads with little lateral acceleration.
