Volvo S70 Radiator

The Volvo S70 Radiator is the frontline heat exchanger of the engine, which promptly removes unwanted heat from the circulating coolant and releases it to air flowing through the grille. Coolant exits the block, running through slender pipes embedded within an aluminum Radiator core; the fins attached to it disperse the heat over a large surface area, and moving air sweeps the heat away mostly by convection, having little to do with pure radiation. The unit is mounted on the nose of the Volvo, and it takes advantage of all the breaths of road air, with electric fans leaping in when traffic drives off the breeze. The majority of S70 automobiles feature an aluminum core and plastic end tanks, a construction that allows the weight to be kept low while still dissipating heat fast; however, some older models were made of copper or brass, sacrificing weight to achieve greater strength as well as easy solder repairs. The objective remains constant with all Volvos regardless of the material, ensuring that each Volvo does not overheat and combustion parts are kept in their happy temperature range. Every small hole may be brazed or welded, and a coolant flush will remove sediment, but the definitive solution is to install a new Radiator to make sure that the Volvo is reliable on hot days. By observing drips and keeping the coolant clean, owners will have many miles of reliable service with this vital part.

Volvo S70 Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit a radiator on Volvo S70?
    A:
To remove the radiator, first drain the cooling system. Next, take out the radiator cooling fan. If applicable, undo the retaining bolts on each side, release the clips, and remove the splash guard located under the radiator. Disconnect the top and bottom hoses from the radiator. For vehicles with air conditioning, undo the upper mounting bolts of the condenser on each side, secure the condenser to the upper body panel with string or wire, and then undo the two lower bolts. For automatic transmission models, disconnect the fluid cooler lines from the left-hand side tank of the radiator, being prepared for fluid spillage, and plug or cap the lines to prevent dirt entry. If fitted, disconnect the engine oil cooler pipe unions from the right-hand side tank of the radiator, also plugging or capping the lines. For turbo models, detach the intercooler air ducts as necessary for radiator removal. Support the radiator, then undo the lower mounting bolts on each side and lift the radiator out of the engine compartment. To refit, reverse the removal operations, refill the cooling system upon completion, and top up the automatic transmission fluid and engine oil if applicable.
