Volvo S70 Control Arm

The Volvo S70 Control Arm is the highly important component of the suspension that enables the front wheels to swing up and down yet remain attached to the frame of the vehicle, offering the sedan stable ride and steering control. The arm is bolted to the chassis at one end, secured by rubber bushings, and attached to the steering knuckle with a ball joint at the other, whereby whenever the springs and shocks respond to road bumps, tire contact with the road remains constant. Each Control Arm of this Volvo has spring, shock, and sway bar mounts; that is, it supports the weight of the vehicle and transfers the cornering forces to the suspension components. There have emerged two broad styles applied in the model, which reflect broader trends in the industry. The early cars were designed with stamped-steel arms, which are strong but prone to rust; this can weaken the metal and make bushing these joints cumbersome, but the cast iron or light cast aluminum Control Arm designs adopted by the S70 later on are equally rigid and offer superior resistance to corrosion, giving Volvo the optimal durability. Despite the material applied, both types of Control Arm have the same wear points; therefore, periodic maintenance is aimed at rejuvenating the bushings and ball joints instead of a complete replacement of the entire assembly. Even collisions or contacts with the curb may bend any arm, and full replacement is the safe way to get everything back to keeping all Volvo drivers, and a high-mileage S70, in a straight line.

Volvo S70 Control Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall a control arm on Volvo S70?
    A:
To remove the control arm you will first need to loosen the front wheel bolts and then chock the rear wheels, apply the handbrake, jack up the front of the car and support the car on some axle stands before removing the front roadwheel. Next, undo the nut and remove the bolt, called a clamp bolt, that holds the suspension control arm balljoint to the Steering Knuckle, pushing down on the suspension arm if you have to in order to release the balljoint shank. If the balljoint is tight, spread the slot in the steering knuckle with a chisel or large screwdriver, being careful not to damage the dust cover. After that, undo the two inner mounting nuts, remove the bolts and take the arm out of the vehicle, bearing in mind that new nuts and bolts will be required for re-installing them. For the overhaul, thoroughly clean the area of the control arm and the surroundings and check for any cracks, damages or distortions, and check the inner pivot bushes for any signs of deterioration. If any bush has to be replaced it is advisable to have the work done by a Volvo dealer as a hydraulic press and suitable spacers are required for the work. In addition, be sure to check the condition of the control arm balljoint as well as wear will require your entire control arm to be replaced. For refitting, place the arm in its mountings, and install the new mounting bolts and nuts, finger-tight to start with. Engage the balljoint shank in the steering knuckle, align the clamp bolt slot with the bolt hole and secure in the clamp bolt and nut and tighten to the specified torque. Refit the roadwheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts in diagonal order and to the specified torque. Finally, tighten control arm inner mountings to specified torque with a torque wrench, and an additional tightening with a specified angle with an angle-tightening gauge.
