Volvo S40 Ignition Coil

Volvo S40 Ignition Coil is the device that converts the measly 12 volts available in the battery to the tens of thousands of volts required to fire each spark plug and keep the engine running. Within a tiny shell of plastic or epoxy are an iron core and two copper windings, hundreds of turns of coarser primary wire and thousands of turns of finer secondary wire. The collapsing field causes 15,000 to 40,000 volts to be induced in the secondary side when the current through the primary side is cut off by the breaker points, and at the moment the current is cut off a crank sensor or the engine control unit causes the spark plug gap to jump. Irrespective of the version, all Volvo S40s have such an Ignition Coil made in this manner. Early S40 models applied the conventional single coil design, which passed this high voltage through a distributor and long plug wires. Subsequent Volvo models applied distributor-less waste spark coil packs, each pack feeding two cylinders per crankshaft stroke, and the new models made the transition to coil-on-plug or coil-near-plug designs with a single coil at each tip, eliminating high-tension leads and improving spark accuracy. Although all variants are the same, the disparities lie in the number of coils and the direction taken by the spark, with fewer wires and the timing being more precise in the new ones. Any Ignition Coil can be weakened by age, heat, vibration, big plug gaps or too much resistance, resulting in misfiring, rough running or low fuel economy, thus early diagnosis will maintain the Volvo performance.

Volvo S40 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the ignition coils on Volvo S40?
    A:
To remove the ignition coils from 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines, pull the plastic cover first up straight from its mountings. Disconnect ignition coil wiring plugs by pressing down the clips It's safest to work on one coil at a time, although all four can be removed if they're marked for position. Each coil is fastened by a bolt, which should be undone before gently pulling the coils from the cylinder head. For 2.4 litre models, the intake manifold or cylinder head cover is the first part that needs to be taken off. If removing the ignition coils for cylinders 1 or 2, remove the clips and remove the timing belt upper cover. Again, disconnect the ignition coil wiring plugs, one at a time if possible, or all 5 if marked. Unscrew the coil retaining bolt and pull the coil and HT cap out of the cylinder head recess. For refitting, align the coil with the mounting bolt hole and lower it firmly on to the spark plug tightening the retaining bolt to the given torque. Finally, push the wiring plug in until it clicks into position and finish by reversing the steps above to remove it.
