How to replace the right-hand differential seal for the side gear oil on Volvo S70?

To change the right hand differential side gear oil seal, first loosen the right hand side front wheel bolts, then jack up the front of the car and support on axle stands, and remove the right hand side front road wheel. Next, unbolt the ABS wheel sensor from the steering knuckle and unbolt the sensor wiring from the suspension strut bracket. Remove the bolt holding the brake hose and ABS wiring bracket to the inner wheel arch and, if necessary, remove the splash guard under the engine. Undo the nut and remove the clamp bolt that holds the suspension control arm balljoint to the steering knuckle, pushing down on the suspension arm if it is necessary to release the balljoint shank. If the balljoint is tight, use a chisel or large screwdriver to spread the slot in the steering knuckle, being careful not to ruin the balljoint dust cover. Remove the cap from the intermediate shaft support bearing by undoing two bolts and swivel the suspension strut and steering knuckle assembly outwards, pulling the intermediate shaft out of the transmission, resting it on one of the fluid pipes for the steering gear. Carefully prise out the oil seal in the transmission casing with a large screw driver or suitable lever without damaging the transmission casing and wipe clean the oil seal seating. Dip the new oil seal in clean oil, press it partially in the casing by hand, and then either use suitable tubing or a large socket to drive your new oil seal fully into position until flush with the edge of the casing. Refit the driveshaft from the top down tightening all nuts and bolts to the specified torque and ensuring that the ABS sensor and location in the steering knuckle is clean. For left hand differential side gear oil seal, similar operations, free the inner CV joint from the transmission and rest the driveshaft on the subframe and refit it, be sure to push the inner CV joint all the way into the transmission to let the retaining circlip lock in place. For input shaft oil seal, remove the transmission, remove the clutch release bearing from the release fork and remove the release fork from the pivot ball-stud. Remove the guide sleeve from the bellhousing, lever out the old oil seal and clean the seat of the oil seal. Lubricate the new seal and fit the same lips to the bellhousing with the lips pointing to the gearcase side by using a socket or appropriate tubing to seat it. Refit the release bearing components in reverse order sparingly lubricating the release fork pivot ball stud with molybdenum desulphated grease and secure the release fork to the slave cylinder lug on the bellhousing with a cable-tie to hold it in place as the transmission is refitted. Finally reassemble the transmission.

Q: How to replace the right-hand differential seal for the side gear oil on Volvo S70?
A:
To change the right hand differential side gear oil seal, first loosen the right hand side front wheel bolts, then jack up the front of the car and support on axle stands, and remove the right hand side front road wheel. Next, unbolt the ABS wheel sensor from the steering knuckle and unbolt the sensor wiring from the suspension strut bracket. Remove the bolt holding the brake hose and ABS wiring bracket to the inner wheel arch and, if necessary, remove the splash guard under the engine. Undo the nut and remove the clamp bolt that holds the suspension control arm balljoint to the steering knuckle, pushing down on the suspension arm if it is necessary to release the balljoint shank. If the balljoint is tight, use a chisel or large screwdriver to spread the slot in the steering knuckle, being careful not to ruin the balljoint dust cover. Remove the cap from the intermediate shaft support bearing by undoing two bolts and swivel the suspension strut and steering knuckle assembly outwards, pulling the intermediate shaft out of the transmission, resting it on one of the fluid pipes for the steering gear. Carefully prise out the oil seal in the transmission casing with a large screw driver or suitable lever without damaging the transmission casing and wipe clean the oil seal seating. Dip the new oil seal in clean oil, press it partially in the casing by hand, and then either use suitable tubing or a large socket to drive your new oil seal fully into position until flush with the edge of the casing. Refit the driveshaft from the top down tightening all nuts and bolts to the specified torque and ensuring that the ABS sensor and location in the steering knuckle is clean. For left hand differential side gear oil seal, similar operations, free the inner CV joint from the transmission and rest the driveshaft on the subframe and refit it, be sure to push the inner CV joint all the way into the transmission to let the retaining circlip lock in place. For input shaft oil seal, remove the transmission, remove the clutch release bearing from the release fork and remove the release fork from the pivot ball-stud. Remove the guide sleeve from the bellhousing, lever out the old oil seal and clean the seat of the oil seal. Lubricate the new seal and fit the same lips to the bellhousing with the lips pointing to the gearcase side by using a socket or appropriate tubing to seat it. Refit the release bearing components in reverse order sparingly lubricating the release fork pivot ball stud with molybdenum desulphated grease and secure the release fork to the slave cylinder lug on the bellhousing with a cable-tie to hold it in place as the transmission is refitted. Finally reassemble the transmission.
