Volvo 940 Windshield Washer Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What role does the Windshield Washer Switch play in the process of removing and reinstalling the steering wheel while ensuring safety precautions on Volvo 940?
    A:
This procedure involves removal of the Steering Wheel and also requires that safety precautions be taken if the vehicle is equipped with the SRS (air bag) system. Start by removing the negative battery cable and turning the steering wheel to the straight ahead position. Remove the center pad from the wheel and then remove the steering wheel retaining bolt being sure to matchmark the wheel and steering shaft, if possible. For vehicles with SRS, take out the locking screw and long tape label from the steering wheel hub, using the lock screw with the tape flag to secure the contact reel. Avoid rotating the steering wheel after the bolt has been removed, to avoid shearing at the pin in the contact reel. Next, remove the steering wheel and upper and lower steering column casings. To remove the switch, remove the retaining screws and unplug the connector. When reassembling the parts, check the position of all the wires to prevent pinching in the casings. Install the switch in the column, reconnect the electrical connectors and tighten retaining screws before installing the column casings. Reinstall the steering wheel, keeping it in line with the wheels and if SRS is on the steering wheel, do not operate the steering wheel until the center bolt is re-installed as the pin in the contact reel can shear. Remove the locking bolt by its flag and store it in the additional hole in the left side of the wheel. Tighten the steering wheel bolt to 42 ft. lbs. (60 Nm), reinstall the center pad, reconnect the negative battery cable and finally, start the vehicle to check the SRS system for faults.
