Volvo 940 Steering Wheel

The Volvo 940 Steering Wheel is the input from the driver into the control over the car, which transforms the rotation of the hands into a coordinated action of the tires in the front part. This Steering Wheel transfers its rotary rotation to the steering gears, in which either a direct mechanical connection or hydraulic aid multiplies the effort of the driver to ensure that the road wheels turn together, such that even a minor rotation by the driver makes the sedan turn with ease. Volvo retained this part over the years as a rough but dependable part, but normal wear or rough use may add vibration, stiffness, or odd noises, which take away control, and it is time to replace it. Two major styles have been produced, both with the same layout in terms of spokes but with variations in power assistance whereby early models applied mainly simple mechanical contact with the road whereas later models have been created using hydraulic assistance to boost power at low speed and still provide road feel at faster speeds; regardless of which type is fitted the purpose remains unchanged. In case drivers are aware of simple DIY activities, they are able to make the replacement themselves and save the labor fee, but Volvo recommends the promptness of action upon the manifestation of the symptoms to ensure safety. With the Steering Wheel having a direct connection to all other steering parts, maintaining the good health of this fundamental interface will keep the classic 940 on the straight and true, crisp and predictable in its handling and performance and assure Volvo owners of the steering they have always known.

    A:
To remove and install the steering wheel, first drive on a level surface with the steering wheel straight. Disconnect the negative battery cable and tape the end of the cable. Turn the ignition key to the position I to turn the steering lock off. Remove the air bag assembly, then remove the steering wheel mounting bolt. Lock the contact reel release locking screw in contact reel parking hole in the steering wheel, make sure the locking screw is in the plastic strip, and lock the contact reel pin to lock the contact reel in zero position. Carefully remove the steering wheel, pulling the lead and plastic strip with the screw through the hole in the center. For installation, place back steering wheel making sure contact reel pin is in the center of the steering wheel hole, and install steering wheel nut finger tight. Remove the screw from the contact reel plastic strip and determine it again in the parking hole on the steering wheel, and tighten the steering wheel nut to 42 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) and reinstall the air bag assembly. When reconnecting the battery, be sure there are no people in the vehicle so that the airbags do not accidentally deploy because of an SRS malfunction. Finally, connect the negative battery cable and test the vehicle operation as well as the SRS system for any fault codes.
