Volvo 940 Distributor Cap

The Volvo 940 Distributor Cap directs the high-voltage spark of the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the correct order, which allows the engine to start in a smooth, automatic manner. This plastic shield protects delicate contacts in the distributor against dirt, vibration, and moisture in the Volvo engine bay and has just one outlet per cylinder in the 4-cylinder red-block motor that is applied throughout the Volvo 940 range. The rotor tip sends electrical energy to all internal terminals, which then trigger through the plug wires and ignite the air-fuel mix at the correct crankshaft angle, and this process repeats thousands of times a minute. When the cap is properly sealed, drivers experience fast cranking, steady idle, and sharp acceleration, but otherwise cracked plastic, corroded posts, or a loose gasket encourage stalling, shaking, squeals, or slow starts, particularly during cold or wet conditions when rapid temperature fluctuations put undue stress on the housing. It has only been fitted with one simple design, a traditional plastic vented shell with an O-ring seal, but with annual modifications more robust resin and foolproof alignment tabs were added to prevent a 180-degree misalignment, thus making an exchange of units an easy task. Due to its low cost and speed of replacement (a few minutes), a high number of owners have a spare Distributor Cap in the trunk just in case, may even remove it during an anti-theft maneuver, and routine inspection, cleaning, and replacement of the Distributor Cap will keep every Volvo on the road happily for years of operation.

Volvo 940 Distributor Cap Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the distributor cap and distributor rotor on Volvo 940?
    A:
To fit and take out the distributor cap, remove the negative battery cable than proceed. It might be required to take off the air cleaner housing and hoses in some models. Then, take out retaining screws of distributor cap and lift it at a right angle without incurring damage to the rotor blade. Unscrew and identify sparks plug wires at the cap and where provided, remove screws connecting rotor to distributor and while doing so, remember the position of the rotor in its housing to place it back. Check the cap and the rotor regarding damage and replace where necessary. To install it, reattach the rotor at the distributor shaft and apply the screw at the back (the retaining bolt, when it is there). Next, you will need to install the distributor cap and screw it in with the retention screws and then reconnect the spark plug wires in the appropriate positions. In case the air cleaner housing is taken out, its placed back, the vehicle started to make sure it was running properly and then the negative battery cable was attached in the end. Once the cap and rotor are removed, wash all the parts thoroughly using soap and water and where possible dry it using compressed air or even a soft cloth that is clean to touch, without leaving the lint or any moisture in them. After cleaning, check cracks, carbon tracks, burns, or other damage, make sure the carbon button on the cap remains and insure that the terminals are free of dirt or corrosion. Carefully inspect the rotor part and the spring to determine the extent of damage and change the parts exhibiting any form of wear or damages.
