Volvo 780 Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Timing Cover and Timing Cover Gasket on Volvo 780?
    A:
To remove and install the 2.8L 6-cylinder engine cover and seal, disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the air cleaner and valve covers. Loosen the fan shroud and remove the fan and then the fan shroud itself. Loosen the alternator, air pump, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor, if equipped, and remove their drive belts. Block the Flywheel from turning, and remove the crankshaft pulley nut (36mm) and the pulley (without dropping the pulley key into the crankcase). Next, take out the power steering pump and set it to the side, then the pump bracket. Remove the 11mm hex retaining bolts for the timing chain cover, tap and remove the timing chain cover. Clean gasket contact surfaces, install the upper gasket on the cover and the lower gasket on the block and install the cover and tighten to 7-11 ft. lbs. (10-15 Nm). tightening the gaskets flush with the valve cover, fit a new Crankshaft Seal, block the flywheel, fit the pulley and key, tighten 36mm nut to 118-132ft.lbs.(160-180Nm) Reinstall power steering pump, pump bracket, alternator, air pump, air conditioning compressor, then fan and shroud, and finally, accessory drive belts. Finally, reconnect the negative battery cable, start the engine and see if there are any leaks. For seal replacement only, follow similar initial steps to disconnect the battery and remove components and use a suitable puller to remove the old seal with care not to damage the timing chain cover contact surface. Fill the space between the lips on the seal with grease, install the new seal with the correct tool, and finish reinstalling the components as was previously described, being sure to check for leaks once the engine is started.
  • Q: How to remove and install the Timing Cover components on Volvo 780?
    A:
To remove and install components to different engine types, start by removing the negative battery cable. For the 2.3L 4-cylinder engine, remove the cooling fan and shroud, drive belts, water pump pulley and timing belt cover. Clean the timing belt cover gasket mating surfaces completely, then install a new gasket for the timing belt cover, then the water pump pulley and drive belts then the fan and shroud and reconnect the battery and check for leaks. For the B234F 4-cylinder engine, the steps include removal of negative battery cable, drive belts, radiator fan and shroud, timing belt covers, cleaning of surfaces followed by fitting new gaskets, water pump pulley, drive belts, fan and shroud and battery reconnect and checking for any leaks. In case of 2.9L 6 cylinder engine, disconnect the negative battery lead, remove the drive belt, lower timing belt cover, splash guard, vibration damper guard, ignition coil cover and upper timing cover, install the upper timing belt cover, ignition coil cover, lower timing belt cover, splash guard, vibration damper guard, drive belt and reconnect the negative battery cable. For 2.3L and 2.4L 5-cylinder engine: Disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the coolant expansion tank, the spark plug cover, the drive belts, the fuel line clips, the right front wheel, and inner fenderwell, and then remove the vibration damper guard and the water pump pulley, and finally remove the timing belt cover. To install, place timing belt cover, tighten with retainer bolts, install water pump pulley and drive belts, reinstall other parts and connect negative battery cable.
