  Q: How to remove and install the water pump on Volvo 760?

  To take out the water pump on a 2.3L 4-cylinder, you need to disconnect the negative of battery cable, turn on the heater control to its maximum heat and take away the expansion tank cap. Located in the engine block and Radiator, open the draincocks and remove the coolant into an appropriate container, then close the draincocks. Next detach radiator shroud and radiator fan, then the lower radiator hose to the water pump. Repeatedly push the retaining bolt of the coolant pipe underneath the Exhaust Manifold back, should the need arise. The next task is the removal of drive belts, water pump pulleys, the water pump bolts, washers, and nuts to withdraw the water pump assembly. To install, clean the contact surfaces of both the gasket with care, apply new gasket and O-rings covered with coolant, and put a thin coating of gasket sealer on the water pump. Install the water pump and then make sure to tighten the retaining bolts to 11-15 ft. lbs. (15-20 Nm) in cross cross pattern. Installation of coolant pipe and lower radiator hose, accessory drive belts, water pump pulley, fan and shroud should be reinstalled. The negative battery cable should be reconnected, the cooling system should be filled with coolant, the engine should be started until it reaches a normal operating temperature, the leakage should be inspected, and further addition of coolant should be mustered. In the 2.8L 6-cylinder engine, loosen 2.8L negative battery, empty the cooling system, and take off the overflow tank cap. Unscrew the radiator hoses and, where provided, the transmission cooler lines at the radiator. Take the fan shroud, radiator, fan, the hoses to water pump to respective cylinders heads, fan belts and water pump pulley. Take the hose off the water pump at the looseness at the back of the water pump and take it out of the block. Install thermal sender, temperature sensor, Thermostat cover, thermostat and rear pump cover on the new pump then installing it and tightening the bolts to 11-15 ft. lbs. (15-20 Nm). Put on the clamps, water pump pulley, fan belts, hoses, fan, shroud, and radiator, re-check the transmission cooler connections (where installed), and install the intake manifold (as needed). The negative battery cable should be reconnected, and the radiator should be filled with coolant when necessary, then the engine is started, and leaks should be checked. In case of 2.9L 6-cylinder engine, unmount the negative battery cable, drain the cooling fluid, lift the Timing Belt and the bolts of the water pump to lift the water pump off. Wipe the mating surfaces and install a new water pump using the new gasket, tighten the mounting bolts up to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and then re-install the timing belt, empty the cooling system, re-connect the negative battery cable and then start the engine, look to see that it does not leak. With the 2.3L and 2.4L 5-cylinder engines, discharge the pressure on the fuel system, disconnect negative battery cable, lift and hold vehicle up, and remove splashguard. Drain system 20 drain the cooling system and loosen the fuel line clips, expansion tank, front Timing Cover and accessory belts. To access the water pump, first remove the timing belt and the water pump retaining bolts to remove the water pump cleaning the area of intersection between the cylinder block and the water pump. Install the new water pump and gasket, and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and then replacement the timing belt and the parts that have been removed previously. Re-connect the negative battery connector, add the cooling system, start the engine till it reaches normal working temperature, and examine the side rims, refilling them when needed.
