Volvo 740 Universal Joints Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a driveshaft and universal joints on Volvo 740?
    A:
To remove and install the driveshaft, first raise and support the vehicle in a safe manner and then mark the position of the driveshaft yokes on the transmission and differential housing flanges for assembly. Remove the nuts and bolts that hold the front and rear driveshaft sections together, remove the support bearing housing from the driveshaft tunnel and lower the driveshaft and universal joint assembly unit. Pry up the lock washer and remove the support bearing retaining nut, and the rear section of the driveshaft along with the intermediate universal joint and splined shaft of the front section are pulled off and the support bearing is pressed off. Remove the support bearing from the support bearing housing, check the driveshaft sections for straightness, out-of-round should not be more than 0.010 inches (0.25mm), otherwise any out-of-round beyond this will cause vibration, and requires replacement. Inspect the bearing of the support for binding and change if required. For installation, insert support bearing into its housing, press on the front part of the driveshaft section, join the splined shaft of the rear part of the driveshaft into the splined sleeve of the front part of the driveshaft. Install the retaining nut and lock washer for the support bearing, making sure you align the yokes to avoid driveline vibration. Position the driveshaft and universal joint assembly to its flange, install but do not tighten the retaining nuts and bolts, position the support bearing housing and install the retaining nut. Tighten the nuts that attach the driveshaft sections to the transmission and differential housing flanges to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm.), lower the vehicle and make a road test to check for driveline vibrations. For U-joint overhaul, remove the driveshaft and clean the area then remove the snaprings that hold the needle bearings in the yokes. Lightly hold the shaft in a vise and tap on the shaft flange with a plastic mallet to poke out the bearing cups and use a lever to press down on the driveshaft to remove the bearing caps. Clean the seats and examine them for wear, replacing worn parts. If reusing old needle bearings, fill them with grease, if using new ones fill them halfway with grease. Position the spider into the flange yoke, tap into position, and press the bearing cups using a vise and sleeve. Do the same for the opposite side, making sure that you center the spider. Fit the spider into the driveshaft yoke, press each of the bearing cups into place, and check for free motion. Driveshaft balancing should be done by a professional who has the right equipment as makeshift methods can be time consuming and difficult. Many machine shops and some parts stores have the option of balancing driveshafts through outside contractors.
