Volvo 740 Radiator

The Volvo 740 Radiator is applied to maintain engine temperatures at a reasonable level by transferring excess heat from the coolant to the passing air before it damage the motor on each trip. The unit is mounted at the front of the car where the air passes through the grille and has narrow Radiator tubes with spaced fins that create a high density to provide the liquid with a high surface area which can then transfer warmth rapidly to the air. Coolant is fed with the help of an inlet tank and circulates around the fin-packed core and empties out of an outlet tank; this feeds back into the engine, although cooler than the previous time, and completes the Volvo cooling loop. Traditionally there were two types in which they were built. The majority of the 740 models use an aluminum core and plastic or aluminum side tanks, which are quicker to shed heat and keep the weight down, although older models of the same vehicle applied heavier copper or brass cores, which can be repaired with solder and are somewhat less prone to corrosion. All modern Radiators rely on convection as the basic heat transfer mode, although the name implies radiation. A leak is the common failure, resulting from age-related cracks or flying debris, and small holes can be sealed by brazing, soldering, or welding, although a severely damaged Radiator ought to be replaced to provide full cooling capability again. Volvo owners have admired the fact that this component provides good temperature control, which is reliable, and this reliability keeps all Volvo engines within a safe operating range.

Volvo 740 Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How should you perform the work with the radiator on Volvo 740?
    A:
Perform this work only on a cold engine. Start out by disconnecting the negative battery cable and setting the heater control to MAX heat. Remove the expansion tank cap and place an appropriate drain pan. Open the cock at the right-hand side of the engine block and fit a hose to collect the coolant, open the radiator draincock. Close the drain cocks in the coolant solution or coolant unit once the coolant is drained completely. Proceed to take out the cooling fan and the cooling fan shroud, and disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses. For those with automatic transmissions, disconnect transmission oil cooler lines at the radiator and plug the lines immediately, catching the spillage in a separate pan. If equipped, remove the connector on the temp sensor on the driver's side top of the radiator. Remove the radiator retaining bolts and brackets, and then remove the radiator assembly from the vehicle (please note: on models 850/C70/S70/V70, the radiator is removed from the bottom of the vehicle). To install the radiator, place it in position and install the retaining bolts. For automatic transmission cars, attach the oil cooler lines, and then install the fan and shroud, and the lower and upper radiator hoses. Connect the expansion tank hose, and make sure the overflow hose is clear of the fan and without sharp bends. Fill the cooling system, via the expansion tank, with 50 percent antifreeze, 50 percent water solution and reconnect the negative battery cable. Operate the engine to normal operating temperature, bleed the cooling system and check for leaks. Top up the cooling system as needed, replace cap and check and top up automatic transmission fluid level.
