Volvo 740 Pressure Plate Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate on Volvo 740?
    A:
To remove and install the rear drive models, first, transmission is to be removed, then scribing alignment marks on the clutch and flywheel. Loosen the bolts that secure the clutch to the flywheel in a diagonal direction, and then remove the bolts and lift off the clutch and pressure plate. Inspect the pressure plate for any damage and measure the distance between the straightedge of a ruler placed diagonally over the friction surface and the inside diameter of the pressure plate and should not exceed 0.008 inch (0.2mm) with no clearance at the outside diameter. For installation, make sure the pressure plate and flywheel are clean, orient the clutch assembly with its longest side away from the engine and line up the bolt holes. Use a centering tool to center the assembly and pilot bearing and install and tighten the clutch retaining bolts in a diagonal pattern, then remove the centering tool and reinstall the transmission. For front drive models, take out the transaxle, lock the flywheel, take out the six bolts holding the pressure plate and disc, and finally the pressure plate and disc. Remove the throwout bearing from the sleeve and fork then clean and inspect the throwout bearing and fork for any damage. Inspect the pressure plate for overheating or cracks and be sure the diaphragm spring is unbroken, and inspect for warpage using a straightedge. Examine the flywheel for damage, and clean the clutch disc if necessary. For installing, lubricate the throwout bearing fork, the throwout bearing and dust cap, and secure the fork, use a centering tool to install the clutch disc and pressure plate. Tighten the bolts on the clutch in rotation to make sure it is correctly aligned and then install the transaxle while testing the clutch operation. For clutch inspection, inspect the pressure plate for damage and curvature and be sure measurements do not exceed 0.008 inch (0.2mm) and inspect for diaphragm spring tips for wear. Rotate the throwout bearing to make sure it rotates easily, and examine the clutch disc for evidence of slippage or oil contamination and replace if needed. When reassembling, use grease for the splines, end shaft, throwout bearing and pivot ball and seat of the clutch fork.
