Volvo 740 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the rear Crankshaft Seal on Volvo 740?
    A:
To remove and install components for 2.3L 4-cylinder engines, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the transmission, then the clutch and pressure plate if it has one. Next, remove the pilot bearing snapring and bearing, and remove the Flywheel or driveplate, being careful not to press in the activator pins for the timing device. Remove the rear oil pan brace, two center bolts of the pan bolted into the seal housing, and two bolts on either side of the two in the seal housing. After that, remove the six seal housing bolts and seal housing taking care not to damage the oil pan gasket. Use special tool 2817 or a suitable replacement to remove the seal. For installation, a new gasket should be applied to the seal housing and the seal should be coated in oil before installation. Install the seal housing and tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern and install the rear oil pan brace and flywheel and tighten the flywheel bolts tightly to 47-54 ft. lbs. in a crisscross pattern with the No. 1 piston at TDC. Coat the outside of the pilot bearing and assemble on the flywheel, then the clutch assembly and transmission, as needed. Finally, connect the negative battery cable, fill the transmission with fluid, start the engine and let it reach operating temperature and check for leaks. For 2.8L 6-cylinder engines, the process starts out very similar with disconnecting negative battery cable and removing transmission, clutch and flywheel or driveplate for automatic transmissions and the crankshaft spacer if applicable. Remove the two rear pan bolts and the bolts in the seal housing before gently removing the housing so as not to damage the oil pan gasket. Use tool 5107 to remove old seal and apply engine oil to new seal and install using seal tool. Tighten the seal housing bolts in crisscross pattern to 7-11 ft. lbs. Install the rear oil pan bolts and then the flywheel and clutch assembly and tighten the flywheel bolts to 33-37 ft. lbs. After fitting the transmission, reattach the negative battery cable, fill the transmission with oil and start the engine, letting it get to operating temperature and check for leaks. For 2.9L 6 cylinder engines, disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the transmission and then the flexplate. Carefully pry out the seal without damaging the faces of the sealing, then clean the seat and check for wear before lubricating the mating surface and forcing in the new seal using a proper installer tool. Install the flexplate using new bolts and threadlocking compound, tightening them in two stages, and then install the transmission and reconnect the negative battery cable. For 2.3L and 2.4L 5-cylinder engines, disconnect the negative battery cable, lift up and prop up the car, and remove the transmission. Remove the flywheel or flexplate as applicable and use a seal puller to remove the old seal; be careful not to damage the surface of the block. Clean the sealing surface on the block, and then install the new seal using special tools. Reinstall flywheel or flexplate and threadlocking compound on bolts in two stages and install transmission, lower vehicle, reconnect negative battery cable.
