Though the timing gears have been fitted, the timing case cover has not yet been addressed. A new gasket should be placed on a clean surface lightly smeared with grease before fitting the cover to the cylinder block, ensuring the mating surface is perfectly clean and very lightly greased, while also checking that the sump gasket is undamaged. If needed, a piece of card or a feeler blade can help position the cover over the gasket, and the front cover bolts should be fitted finger-tight. The cover must be aligned so that the harmonic balancer extension is perfectly central, allowing a 0.004 in (0.02 mm) feeler gauge to be inserted comfortably all around it, with a recheck after fully tightening the fixing bolts. A new felt ring, well oiled, should be fitted next, followed by the retaining washer and circlip, ensuring the circlip is properly embedded in its groove. Finally, the front sump bolts should be inserted and tightened to the specified torque.
